WAFU Technology ®

As a water treatment solutions provider, WETS is constantly seeking innovative ways to address our clients’ water treatment needs. Our years of experience in aeration and gravity filtration systems led to the development of the Water Aeration Filtration Unit (WAFU®), which combines aeration and filtration processes in a single vessel.

This innovation reduces equipment and total installed cost, simplifies operation and ongoing maintenance, and can reduce the footprint required for the equipment.

Aeration Water Treatment Systems and VOC Strippers

In an aeration water treatment system, water is contacted with air for two purposes: to strip volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and gases out of the water, and to expose contaminants in the water to oxygen so they can be oxidized.

Hundreds of systems installed

In more than 50 years of operation, WETS has installed or retrofitted hundreds of aeration and stripping systems — elevated and ground aerators, VOC and methane strippers, and degassifiers — engineered to each site’s water chemistry.

Air is contacted with the water to strip volatile compounds and to oxidize objectionable components, often in a single vessel.

Where the goal is only stripping of volatile components — such as for a methane stripper — the equipment is typically called a VOC stripper or gas stripper.

Where the goal is to oxidize objectionable components, the equipment is typically called an aerator. Strippers and aerators are similar in configuration, and aerators often serve a stripping function as well.

Depending on contaminant levels and required efficiency, WETS can design an aerator, VOC stripper, or degassifier suited to demanding specifications. We offer both ground-level and elevated aerator configurations to meet client requirements.

Aerator

WETS aeration water treatment systems are widely used for iron and manganese removal and THM treatment. Aerators are available in two configurations — forced draft and induced draft. Contact a WETS professional engineer for an aeration design recommendation tailored to your needs.

VOC Stripper / Degassifier

WETS VOC strippers and degassifiers deliver a guaranteed, high-percentage reduction of gases and VOCs from groundwater sources. Our forced draft design and unique internal packing media are selected by our application engineers for maximum efficiency, with degassifier designs available for both low- and high-iron applications.

Built for performance at low operating cost

Whether installing a new system or renovating an existing one, our approach to filtration ensures superior performance at low operational cost. WETS provides gravity filtration systems as well as horizontal and vertical pressure filter configurations. Our horizontal multi-cell pressure filter requires minimal space, refined over many years of plant experience and close collaboration with plant operators. WETS can fabricate a range of filtration systems for iron removal and other contaminants.

Media selection is guided by pilot study results specific to each application.

Gravity Filtration Systems

WETS conventional gravity filtration systems combine high efficiency with a cost-competitive design. Our proprietary underdrain is a simple design that delivers better performance and longer filter bed life than the more expensive, complex designs offered by established filter vendors. We offer gravity filters ranging from 1 MGD to more than 10 MGD, with manual valve options or fully integrated SCADA systems based on client requirements.

Pressure Filtration Systems

WETS offers vertical or horizontal pressure filters, typically used where well water can be transferred directly to the GST under pressure. These systems are well suited to smaller flows and facilities with higher headroom but compact footprints.

Cooling Tower Systems

The WETS cooling tower is frequently used to cool and treat water drawn from deep aquifers such as the Catahoula, which tend to run at high temperatures and may contain elevated levels of volatile components such as methane and hydrogen sulfide.

Two problems, one process

Induced draft or forced draft

WETS designs modern, high-efficiency induced draft and forced draft cooling towers for deep-aquifer sources, addressing both temperature reduction and volatile contaminant removal.

It’s another example of how WETS’ unique designs deliver multiple solutions in a single process.

  • Temperature reduction
  • Volatile contaminant removal

Our position on
THM removal

While tank ventilation and aeration systems for THM removal are available in the industry, WETS does not provide or recommend them. Where aeration is the best option for THM treatment, we recommend dedicated THM removal in a separate aeration vessel.

Integrating aeration for THM removal into a tank design presents considerable challenges, and WETS frequently fields troubleshooting requests for these systems — which is why we recommend a separate aeration vessel from the outset.
